In celebration of the Month of the Ocean (MOO), this May, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region 10 (DENR 10) through the leadership of Regional Executive Director (RED) Henry A. Adornado leads the conduct of the simultaneous coastal clean-up in the 12 coastal barangays in the city namely Bulua, Bayabas, Bonbon, Macabalan, Puntod, Lapasan, Gusa, Cugman, Tablon, Agusan, Puerto and Bogo on May 10, 2024.
RED Adornado thanked officials and representatives from several government agencies, academe, civil society organizations, private sectors and the Barangay Local Government Units (BLGUs) for the continued collaboration to protect and conserve our oceans which is an essential action to safeguard the health and well-being of both marine ecosystems and communities.
This year’s Month of the Ocean theme is “Develop a sustainable and equitable blue economy,” in line with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Ocean Decade Challenge 4. It has significant economic value as it provides billions of livelihoods worldwide such as fishing, shipping, tourism, and offshore energy production, Adornado added.
The Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs/CENROs) also conducted their respective Month of the Ocean activities in their areas of jurisdiction including coastal clean-up activities and Information, Education and Communication campaigns that are being undertaken through radio interviews, community assemblies and other activities to heighten the awareness of the stakeholders.
The observance of the Month of the Ocean is mandated through Presidential Proclamation No. 57, series of 1999, which aimed to promote the sustainable management of coastal and ocean resources in the country and to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and protection of these resources.
