An overstaying South Korean fugitive was arrested in Cebu over his alleged involvement in telecommunications fraud, according to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
In a news release, the BI said authorities nabbed suspect Kang Hyeunok, 32, in Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City on August 14.
Kang was the subject of an Interpol red notice after an arrest warrant was issued against him in South Korea for allegedly heading a voice phishing syndicate that has been operating since 2017 and has already defrauded its victims of more than US$840,000.
The syndicate’s telemarketers reportedly disguised themselves as bankers and managed to induce victims into revealing personal information which they used to defraud and gain illegal profits.
The BI board of commissioners issued a deportation warrant against the suspect in October 2021 for being an undesirable alien. He was also found to be an overstaying alien after records showed he arrived in the Philippines in July 2019 and did not depart since.
He is now detained at the BI warden facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City while awaiting deportation proceedings.—Sundy Locus/AOL, GMA Integrated News
