Prosecutors have recommended the filing of charges against the suspect in last week’s fatal shooting of a motorist during a traffic altercation in Makati City, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Thursday.
In a statement, the DOJ said the Makati City Prosecutor’s Office found probable cause to indict Gerrard Raymund Yu for murder and violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act over the killing of a 65-year-old driver.
The prosecutors did not recommend bail for Yu.
“We have an airtight case right now based on available evidence and witnesses. [We] ensure that justice will be served,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said.
The murder complaint against Yu was filed on May 31.
Yu fled following the shooting incident on May 28 but was eventually arrested at his house in Pasig City. His wife later surrendered two firearms and four magazines with ammunition to police authorities.
“I hope that this unfortunate event, where another life has been lost because of a mere traffic altercation, serve as a constant reminder to every driver that violence will never solve anything,” Remulla said.
The DOJ said the victim’s son will represent his father in the case.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has already suspended Yu’s driver’s license.
Yu earlier appealed to the public not to judge him, saying he is a good person. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
