THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has been asked by Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong to inspect the area in Barangay Cantao-an where soil cracking occurred and affected around 40 households of the barangay’s Sitio Riverside, Purok 1-B Upper, and 1-A Lower.
The soil erosion was attributed by the locals to the DPWH’s ongoing road project that crosses across the mountains from Naga City to Danao City in northern Cebu.
According to Cantao-an barangay captain Christina Ababa, at least 28 people have already received relocation payments from the DPWH, while 24 families are still present at the project site, including those close to the riprap.
Currently, the city government has prepared a covered court with four rooms that will serve as temporarily shelter for the affected individuals.
The city government will also find a space for those who couldn’t be accommodated at the covered court.
But according to Mayor Chiong, some of the inhabitants signed a waiver because they did not want to leave their homes and other properties.
In a radio interview, one of the locals, Rosena Candol, expressed concern about the soil cracking in their area and said they do not want a repeat of an incident in September 2018 when up to 70 people perished after being buried in mounds due to a landslide that was allegedly caused by the ongoing quarry operations in Barangay Tina-an.
Because of this, Chiong wanted the DPWH to reevaluate the status of the residents impacted by the soil cracking, of which the findings will be made as the basis for providing assistance to the residents. (ANV, TPT)
