Heightened security maintained as Undas travelers head home

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) maintained heightened security at major transport terminals and key thoroughfares as millions of Filipinos began their return trips after spending this year’s “Undas” holidays with their families.

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. ordered police personnel nationwide to prevent criminal activities, maintain peace and order, and ensure the safety of motorists and commuters amid the expected surge in passenger traffic.

This is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr., through the guidance of DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to ensure peace and order, public safety, and ease traffic flow as millions travel back from the provinces.

“As travelers make their way back to their homes, schools, and workplaces, the PNP remains fully mobilized to keep roads secure, maintain public order, and respond swiftly to any incident that may disrupt travel. Our priority is to ensure that every Filipino reaches their destination safely,” Nartatez said in a statement on Monday.

The top cop has directed all Police Regional Offices to sustain heightened visibility patrols along major highways, bus terminals, seaports, airports, and transport interchanges, particularly in areas where large volumes of passengers and vehicles are expected.

With long journeys and heavy traffic expected during the return rush, Nartatez also reminded motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe road safety regulations.

“No destination is worth risking lives for. We urge motorists to follow traffic laws, avoid speeding, never drive under the influence of alcohol, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, and take adequate rest before long trips,” he said.

More than 1.16 million people visited Manila’s two major public cemeteries on Nov. 1 to observe All Saints’ Day. Elsewhere in other parts of the country, millions more also visited their departed loved ones with their families.

Nartatez called on the public to remain vigilant and responsible as they return to their respective destinations.

“As we conclude this meaningful observance, let us carry home not only cherished memories of our loved ones but also a renewed commitment to protect one another through responsible and law-abiding behavior. The PNP stands with every Filipino in ensuring a safe journey back to daily life,” he said.
