US President Donald Trump on Saturday promised to give every adult American $5,000 if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections.

Trump made the pledge in a video statement posted on his official X account (formerly Twitter), crediting Republican leadership with what he described as strong economic performance and record investment in the United States.

“If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America $5,000,” Trump said.

He said the payments would be possible because the US government was collecting “massive amounts of money through tariffs,” which he linked to what he called record-setting economic success.

Trump did not provide details on how the proposed $5,000 payments would be funded, how much the program would cost or what legislation would be required to implement it.

He also warned voters that a Democratic victory in the House and Senate would result in higher taxes and a severe economic downturn.

“It’ll be a 1929 disaster if they get in,” Trump said, referring to the year the US stock market crash helped usher in the Great Depression.

“So, if the Democrats win, you will have an economic depression much like 1929. If the Republicans win, you will each have $5,000 in your pocket and economic success for our country like we have never, ever seen before,” he added.

Trump also cited his recent announcement of a $1,776 payment to members of the US military, a figure he said was meant to evoke the year 1776, when the United States declared independence.

“Everybody got their money,” Trump said, adding that he would do it again.

Trump described the military payments as part of what he called the “Trump dividend,” which he valued at approximately $1 trillion.

He separately claimed that $21 trillion had been invested in the United States over the previous 15 months, without providing details in the statement about the source or composition of that figure.

Trump said the proposed $5,000 payments would be “a very easy thing” for him to deliver, while arguing that Democrats would not be able to do the same.

“So, thank you and I look forward to signing those checks,” he said.— MCG, GMA News
