The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Sunday ordered the expansion and construction of additional drainage systems along parts of G. Araneta Avenue in Quezon City to help floodwaters recede faster.
During an inspection to the flood-prone area, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said they would start the project once the heavy rains subside.
“Sisimulan na namin basta ‘pag hindi na masyado umuulan, kasi rin hindi kami makatrabaho nang umuulan,” Dizon said during a dialogue with residents.
(We will start as soon as the heavy rains stop, because we also cannot work properly while it’s raining.)
In a social media post, the agency said residents observed faster recession times and lower levels of floodwater compared to last year, when the old drainage system had not yet been replaced, and local canals and waterways were not regularly declogged.
During the heavy, continuous rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) in August, G. Araneta Avenue was among the roadways inundated by flooding.
Previous reports indicated that at one point, portions of the road were passable only to heavy vehicles. —Lyjah Tiffany Bonzo/RF, GMA News
