MARAWI CITY (MindaNews / 1 August 2026) – Seven contingents competed for awards during the first Pakaradiyaan or Sarimanok Festival held Thursday to culminate the 67th founding anniversary of Lanao del Sur. Sarimanok, a legendary bird of the Meranaws, was the festival’s focal point, explained Steve Patrick Fernandez, a competition judge, via a phone interview. Fernandez, founder of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild, highlighted that Masiricampo Abantas Memorial National High School of Wao town won major awards for choreography, musicality, and attire, being the sole contingent to depict the province’s tri-People populace (Meranaw, Higaonon, and settlers). Angoyao National High School of Marawi City secured first runner-up, followed by Lomabao Memorial National High School, Ragayan National High School, and Poona Bayabao National High School. Lanao Agricultural College of Lumbatan was named the most disciplined. Governor Mamintal Adiong emphasized the importance of preserving Meranaw cultural heritage, stating that the competition brought the Sarimanok legend to life through dances, music, and vibrant performances. Ahmad Nouraldinn Tamano, provincial tourism officer, noted the event aimed to introduce younger generations to Meranaw culture, inspired by the Darangen, the UNESCO-recognized Meranaw epic.
