The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will seek P1.5 billion under its proposed 2027 budget to upgrade and expand the drainage system along Taft Avenue in Manila as part of efforts to address the area’s recurring flooding.
In a Balitanghali report by Bea Pinlac, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon on Friday inspected drainage facilities along the southbound lane of Taft Avenue, where several drainage lines were found to be narrow and clogged.
DPWH personnel conducted manual declogging works the drainage system on Friday after completing similar activities on the northbound lane.
Dizon said the department has increased the frequency of declogging operations from once a year to every three months to help mitigate flooding.
However, he said declogging alone is not enough to solve the problem. He added that the department aims to fast-track the drainage upgrade next year if Congress approves the proposed budget.
According to the DPWH, the proposed project includes upgrading and widening the drainage system along Taft Avenue. The department also said nearby pumping stations must be functioning properly to improve flood management in the area.
If funding is approved, the DPWH aims to complete the drainage upgrades before the start of the 2027 rainy season.
The agency also appealed to the public to dispose of garbage properly to prevent drainage systems from becoming clogged, which contributes to flooding during heavy rains. — VDV, GMA News
