A local basketball tournament in Barangay 116 in Manila erupted into a violent brawl and stabbing incident.

According to Bernadette Reyes’ report in “24 Oras” on Monday, the incident started after the players did not agree with the referee’s call.

Tension escalated after some spectators also joined the brawl. One spectator was caught with a knife in his hand as he ran after someone else.

A man identified as Arsenio Albario Jr. was hacked by a certain alias “Leo” following a basketball court fight involving their respective nephews.

The victim was rushed to the Gat Andres Bonifacio Medical Center for treatment, while the suspect immediately fled and remains at large.

“Yung player naman po, nagkaroon ng intentional foul. Inamin naman talagang sinadya. Kaya lang nahaluuan na ng mga kamag-anak,” said barangay chairperson Edgar Solis.

(As for the player, there was an intentional foul. He admitted that it was indeed done on purpose. However, the relatives ended up getting involved.)

“Nagkakagulo na pala doon sa kabilang street…doon sila nagkatagaan na,” he added.

(It turns out a commotion was already happening on the next street… that is where they ended up hacking each other.)

On the other hand, a man received a word that his son was being assaulted at the basketball court. But his attempt to come to his son’s rescue was thwarted when they were accosted by a man wielding a sharp weapon.

“Pagdating ko, nakita ko na ang anak ko may damage sa mukha. ‘Yung pamangkin ko, sabi niya nasa loob ng court mismo ‘yung nambugbog sa anak ko,” he said.

(When I arrived, I saw an injury on my son’s face. My nephew told me that the person who beat up my son was right there inside the court.)

Another man, who was only trying to break up the fight, was also caught in the middle.

“Nakita ko lang nagra-rambol sila sa. Tapos ngayon inaawat ko, tapos bumalik may dalang taga. Tinraydor kami, mga kasamahan ko. Tapos pinagtataga na, ako unang pinagtataga diyan,” said alias “Totoy.”

(I just saw them brawling. So I tried to break it up, but then [the suspect] came back with a machete. We were blindsided, including my companions. Then he just started hacking away, and I was the first one he began slashing.)

Authorities are currently looking for the suspect, who could face charges of frustrated homicide. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA News
