House Impeaches Vice President Sara Duterte

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/ 11 May 2026) – The House of Representatives has voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte. With 257 members voting in favor, 25 against, and nine abstaining, the Lower House adopted Committee Report No. 261 and House Resolution 989, sending the four Articles of Impeachment against her to the Senate.

Batangas 2nd District Representative Gerville R. Luistro, chairperson of the Committee on Justice, stated that the proceedings followed due process, leading to the determination of probable cause. The four Articles of Impeachment cite culpable violation of the Constitution, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes, and betrayal of public trust.

Article 1 alleges misuse of confidential funds using questionable documents; Article 2 concerns unexplained wealth discrepancies in her Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN); Article 3 involves bribery in exchange for influence from DepEd officials; and Article 4 cites threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

Under the Constitution, impeachment requires at least one-third of House members’ approval. Four previous impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte, with the Supreme Court ruling the fourth unconstitutional in January 2026 for violating due process.

Dinagat Island Representative Arlene J. Bag-ao urged Duterte to face the allegations, emphasizing the need for justice. Mamamayang Liberal Partylist Representative Leila M. De Lima defended the impeachment as a constitutional accountability mechanism, citing evidence of fund misuse, falsified documents, and unexplained wealth.

This marks the second impeachment attempt against Duterte. The first, in February 2025, was voided by the Supreme Court due to procedural flaws, halting the Senate trial. (Antonio L. Colina IV/MindaNews)
