The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will deploy 17,000 personnel across the country to ensure maritime safety and security amid the expected surge of travelers during the Holy Week.

In a statement, the PCG said the deployment will be from March 28 to April 5, 2026, when millions of Filipinos are anticipated to travel by sea.

PCG commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan ordered all Coast Guard districts, stations, and substations to be on heightened alert and intensify monitoring of passenger vessels, ports, and nautical highways.

The move is in line with the directive of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez to strengthen maritime operations during the Lenten season.

Stricter vessel inspections will be implemented, including thorough pre-departure checks to prevent overloading and ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations.

PCG personnel will conduct round-the-clock monitoring of passenger vessels and key inter-island routes along the western and eastern seaboards.

K9 units and security teams will also lead port inspections and passenger screening to deter illegal activities and maritime crimes.

Search and rescue units, medical teams, and deployable response groups will be placed on standby for possible maritime emergencies.

The PCG will coordinate with local government units (LGUs) and lifeguards to strengthen safety monitoring in beach areas and other maritime recreation sites, apart from regular coastal and seaborne patrols to ensure quick response to incidents.

Meanwhile, passengers are discouraged from bringing prohibited items such as flammable liquids, hazardous chemicals, fireworks, and other dangerous materials to avoid inconvenience during travel.

These measures will be implemented in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and LGUs.

“As millions of Filipinos travel this Holy Week, the PCG stands ready to keep our seas safe. We urge the public to follow safety guidelines and coordinate with authorities so everyone can reach their destinations and return home safely,” Gavan said. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
