Mindanao Expresses Diminished Backing for Anti-Dynasty Law, Pulse Asia Reveals

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 13 March) — While 64% of Filipinos support a law banning political dynasties, Mindanao respondents show weaker support, with only 32% in favor, according to Pulse Asia’s latest survey conducted from February 27 to March 2, 2026. Nationally, 17% oppose the measure, and 19% are undecided, but in Mindanao, 39% oppose it, and 29% remain undecided, making it the only major region without majority support. Support is higher elsewhere: 69% in Metro Manila, 74% in Luzon, and 73% in the Visayas. Mindanao’s political landscape remains dominated by dynastic families, with 23 of its 28 provinces governed by political clans. Support for specific anti-dynasty reforms, such as banning relatives from consecutively holding positions or holding simultaneous national and local offices, is consistently lower in Mindanao (47%-53%) compared to Luzon (71%-76%) and Visayas (73%-81%). A December 2025 Pulse Asia survey also found only 5% in Mindanao “very much agree” with banning political dynasties. In Congress, House and Senate committees have approved consolidated anti-dynasty bills banning relatives up to the second degree from holding simultaneous elective posts, though critics argue the measures are “watered down.” The survey highlights regional complexities, particularly in Mindanao, where family-based political networks remain entrenched.
