FOUR members of an extremist group in Mindanao have surrendered to the military and turned over high-powered firearms during a simple ceremony held Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Army’s 6th Infantry (Redskin) Battalion headquarters in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur. The surrendered weapons consisted of an Armalite16 rifle, a Garand rifle, and two grenade launchers. Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, underscored the courage shown by the surrenderees “in choosing to renounce armed struggle and embrace peace.” He urged other remaining members of extremist groups to follow their example and return to the fold of the law to avoid further harm brought about by misguided ideology.
