Woman gets life sentence, P2M fine for illegal recruitment, estafa

A woman was sentenced to life imprisonment and required to pay a P2 million fine after she was found guilty of estafa and large-scale illegal recruitment, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Monday.

According to a DMW statement, three victims said they were offered employment as domestic helpers with a P30,000 monthly salary for a two-year contract in Cyprus and Palau.

In exchange, the victims said they will give a placement fee of P90,000 to P155,000.

Despite giving the necessary documents and fees to the recruiter, the victims did not receive any employment contract and were unable to work abroad.

For engaging in illegal recruitment, the recruiter was sentenced to life imprisonment with a P2,000,000 fine. along with payment of moral damages to the victims.

The court also sentenced the recruiter to two months and one day to one year and one day imprisonment and ordered her to return the money paid by each victim under the estafa case.

Authorities are also searching for an “Alias Boy,” who referred one of the victims to the recruiter for a P155,000 fee. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA Integrated News
