The Partido Demokratiko ng Pilipinas (PDP) has urged the Philippine government to allow the return of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the country. However, it is believed that the PDP’s leadership is misguided in its appeal, as there is no indication that the Philippine government is blocking Duterte’s return. The International Criminal Court (ICC), which is currently detaining Duterte, has rejected his petition for an interim release, and there has been no move or effort by the ICC to send him back to the Philippines.
It is suggested that the PDP should instead submit a petition to the ICC demanding Duterte’s release and allowing him to return to the Philippines. If the ICC were to grant this request, then the PDP could demand that the Philippine government allow Duterte’s return.
An independent commission has been formed to investigate anomaly-laden flood control projects in Luzon and the Visayas, composed of two retired Supreme Court senior justices, Antonio Carpio and Estela Perlas Bernabe, and a forensic expert. While the capability and integrity of the justices are not in question, some may doubt Carpio’s fairness due to his past disagreements with Duterte and other government officials.
The investigation into corruption is hindered by suspicions of impartiality and partisanship, which can deter the country’s push for socio-economic development and the streamlining of its justice and political system. Corruption is a significant issue in the Philippines, with all sectors calling for an end to it and for corrupt officials to be held accountable. However, even before investigations can begin, suspicions of bias are cast on the designated probers, making it challenging to tackle corruption effectively.
On a personal note, the author reflects on their decision not to pursue a civil engineering course in college, as suggested by their parents, and instead chose a different path. While they may not have achieved wealth, they are grateful for their decision, which led them to a career with no temptation for corruption, unlike some engineers working at the Department of Public Works and Highways who may have been tempted by corruption. The author’s choice allowed them to maintain their integrity and live a happy family life, even if it meant forgoing potential wealth.
