Marhaba Boracay: Transforming the Island into a Muslim-Friendly Paradise

Boracay Island, Aklan—At the heart of Boracay, one of the world’s best beaches, lies a Muslim community that has long sought peace and trade opportunities. With the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) Halal Beach Tourism Destination Program, this community is now playing a significant role in welcoming more Muslim visitors, including those from Mindanao, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Malaysia. Solaiman Daud Maguindanao, Imam of Masjid Al-Noor Mosque in Sitio Ambulong, highlighted the growing interest from tourists and the community’s excitement for the economic benefits this initiative may bring. Boracay’s Muslim population, currently around 2,000, primarily works in souvenir trading and aims to showcase their cultural traditions through Halal Tourism. The DOT’s flagship program, “Marhaba Boracay: Halal Shores for Muslim Travelers,” was launched on September 10, 2024, in partnership with Megaworld Hotels & Resorts and the Malay local government. This initiative aims to create a Muslim-friendly cove spanning 850 sqm, catering to the cultural and religious needs of Muslim travelers. The Philippines, recognized as the 8th rising Muslim-friendly destination by the Global Muslim Travel Index 2025, is making strides in inclusivity, with establishments offering Halal-certified services and facilities. The DOT’s efforts, supported by the Global Tourism Business Association, are transforming Boracay into a welcoming destination for Muslim travelers, promoting cultural appreciation and economic growth.
