Philippines Government Initiates Emergency Rehabilitation of Visayas and Mindanao Power Plants

The Philippines’ Department of Energy has directed the fast restoration of power plants in Visayas and Mindanao to help stabilize the grid, as nearly 1 GW of power is on forced outage. Approximately 943.9 megawatts of energy generation capacity is affected, with 14 generation facilities in Visayas and 11 in Mindanao on forced outage. The Energy Secretary emphasized that the restoration of these facilities must be treated with utmost urgency. The Visayas and Mindanao grids have been placed under yellow alert status, with available capacities of 2,528 MW and 2,827 MW, respectively, and peak demands projected to reach 2,475 MW and 2,667 MW. To ease grid pressure, the department has instructed private distribution utilities to prepare for the possible activation of the Interruptible Load Program, and is calling on the public to use electricity wisely, particularly during peak hours.
