BI to transfer some high-profile foreign detainees to more secure facility

The Bureau of Immigration plans to transfer several high-profile foreign detainees to a more secure holding facility, in the wake of a Korean fugitive’s escape while in BI custody.

According to a report by Christian Maño on Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday, BI Commissioner Joel Viado said that the move will be made to better monitor the detainees, after the 28-year-old South Korean man, wanted for fraud in his native country, managed to escape during a hearing.

The man was later rearrested, but the Senate said it will probe how he was able to escape.

Viado has ordered some BI personnel to be sacked over the incident. He has also ordered mandatory background checks on BI staff guarding high-profile detainees, and their regular rotation.

Detainees will also attend hearings via videoconferencing for the moment to lessen the risk of another security breach. — BM, GMA Integrated News
