VP Duterte Returns to Manila After Hong Kong Trip

Vice President Sara Z. Duterte arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila at 3:21 p.m. on Tuesday, hours after her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested based on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). She arrived via Philippine Airlines flight PR 319 from Hong Kong, where her father had also been. The Office of the Vice President stated that her trip to Hong Kong was personal, though videos shared online showed her attending a rally organized by her father’s supporters. Former President Duterte arrived earlier at 9:21 a.m. on Cathay Pacific flight CX907, accompanied by his common-law partner Honeylet Avancena and their daughter Veronica “Kitty” Duterte. Veronica’s live Instagram videos provided initial glimpses of the arrest. Inside Villamor Air Base, Duterte was seen being read his constitutional rights by Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. Avancena appealed for kindness, emphasizing Duterte’s age as he is turning 80 on March 28. (Yas D. Ocampo / MindaNews)
