A woman died after she jumped out of a jeepney that was being robbed in Quezon City, an incident that also injured five other passengers.
According to the report of James Agustin in 24 Oras Thursday, the 29-year-old victim struck her head on the ground after she jumped out of the moving jeepney along Commonwealth Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
She was brought to a hospital but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver said he was enroute from Lagro to Cubao when the suspect boarded the jeepney in the Don Fabian area.
The suspect suddenly took out a knife and declared a holdup.
“Yung babae nanlalaban, ayaw niya ibigay yung bag niya kasi andoon daw yung ID niya. Eh inambahan yung babae na sasaksakin baga, kaya ibinigay na niya,” said Edgardo Cabiente.
(The woman tried to resist because she didn’t want to give her bag since she said it contained her ID. But the man threatened to stab her so she surrendered her bag.)
In fear for their safety, the other passengers, including the driver’s partner, jumped out of the jeepney.
The suspect attempted to escape but several motorcycle riders who saw what happened caught and mauled him.
Authorities were able to recover the woman’s bag and the knife.
“Pagdating namin sa area, andoon na yung mga riders na humabol sa suspek natin […] Inawat namin mga sibilyan, inilagay namin sa mobile yung suspek para hindi na masaktan,” said Patrolman Steve Fontillas, a member of the security detail of QC Task Force Disiplina.
(When we arrived in the area, we saw the riders who chased the suspect…We pacified the mob, transferred him inside our vehicle to avoid more injuries.)
The 54-year-old suspect admitted to the crime.
“Dami ko na pong kasalanan sa pamilya ko. Nawalan po ako ng trabaho… Tama lang bayaran ko yung nagawa kong kasalanan,” he said.
(I’ve made so many mistakes to my family. I lost my job…It’s just right for me to pay for all my wrongdoings.)
Police said the man was previously arrested for robbery.
The suspect was turned over to the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit in Camp Karingal. He is facing complaints for robbery with homicide and physical injuries. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
